The Howlers are assigned to rescue an Australian spotter on the island of Tarawa prior to the US invasion. The spotter, Rolfe Harrison, has information that will greatly aid in the invasion.
However, the Japanese are prepared for the Howlers and they are captured. Harrison, seeing the capture, sneaks into the japanese prison camp and rescues the Howlers who just barely escape the pursuit, but they have to leave Izzy behind as he had been selected for 'special interrogation' by the Japanese commandant.
