Aunt May is recovering from her heart attack, which means Peter is unable to leave her alone long enough to act as Spider-Man. He's forced to run from battles, not just with random thugs, but with Sandman and others. It isn't long before the entire world has branded him a coward, and he decides to hang up his tights for life.
