In an attempt to beat "the Reds" to the moon, the Four take off in a new rocket Reed has designed. They are unaware of a Russian effort, too, made by a scientist who brings three apes along in his unshielded vessel, with the intention to expose them all to greater doses of cosmic rays than the FF originally faced. He succeeds in giving his crew superpowers, which they then use to attack the FF on the moon. A mysterious alien known as the Watcher intervenes, placing them all on a level playing field.
