Captain Marvel pulls through the Negative Zone into a Skrull staging area. What he sees triggers his memories: he is not the real Captain Marvel. He was a Skrull agent implanted with Mar-Vell's memories during the Kree-Skrull War, but the memory implantation procedure failed, and his original memories and mission did not properly retrigger. He decides that, despite his body's history, he will continue to act as Earth's hero, starting by finding the Skrulls within the Church of Hala, and dropping them into Earth's atmosphere from space. They do not find the journey pleasant. His next destination is unrevealed here, but can be found in "Secret Invasion #1."
