Disgruntled employee Kurt Vornak returns, and plans to destroy Metamorpho to ensure his plans continue uninterrupted. Java aids him, suckered by the promise of winning Sapphire. Things go awry, and Vornak becomes a living atom, destroying the city. Both Java and Metamorpho appear to die in the effort of stopping him, but Simon has a plan that might restore them.
