While fighting in the US Army, Johnny Dune discovers he has the power to make people follow his words, essentially controlling them. At first wanting to run for mayor, he is betrayed by local politicians and, by way of singing at a pop concert, takes control of the youngsters of his town and also ensnares several members of the League.As the demonstration he organises turns into a riot, Dune is struck down while the League, free of his control, calm the rioters.When he recovers, Dune finds his power gone and pledges to enter politics to make a change.
