The Mole Man sends envoys to his longtime nemesis the Fantastic Four, before meeting them himself. Years ago, the High Evolutionary built a hidden city far below the surface of the Earth where he would be able to experiment, entirely cut off from the waking world. He planned to use his technology to artificially advance the evolution of creatures, and show the world the splendor of the civilization he would create. Instead, his Ascension Engine worked backwards, devolving it's subjects. He fled, but was unable to turn the Engine off. Now, some of the moloids have encountered the city, and devolved into forms close to those of surface humans - their intellects have also increased. Now they intend to raise the city, threatening the world with untold geological devastation.
