A flare is discharged above the city, and the smoke spells out "The Fantastic Four." This causes quite a stir among the crowd, as most have heard of that group before. Four in the city have, however, and they soon group themselves together. Sue Storm, known as the Invisible Girl, Benjamin Jacob Grimm, known as the Thing, and Johnny Storm, Sue's brother and the Human Torch, all meet Reed Richards, who now calls himself Mister Fantastic. Reed was trying to design the rocket that would beat the communists to space, and succeeded. The flight conditions were perfect, but there was no time to get clearance, so Reed, his pilot Ben, his girlfriend Sue and his future brother-in-law Johnny effectively steal the craft and launch. They are, in fact, the first humans in space, but they were not sufficiently shielded from the cosmic rays they found, and were transformed into the superhumans they now are. They have pulled together in response to the loss of several nuclear power plants around the world. Reed has triangulated the source of the problems to Monster Isle, so they head there and meet the Mole Man, a human driven underground due to his extreme ugliness. The Mole Man has learned to control the monsters of Monster Isle, and has been using them to try and take over the world. The only remaining question is whether these four novice adventurers are able to defeat the Mole Man and his army of creatures.
