Moonlighting
When former fashion model Maddie Hayes goes broke and finds that one of her few remaining assets is ownership of the Blue Moon Detective Agency, she is tempted to liquidate it until she meets the quirky employees and gets involved in their even quirkier cases. Moonlighting as a series was plagued by production delays and erratic scheduling. Scheduled episodes were often delayed for weeks and reruns substituted at the last minute. Many in-jokes and short fill-in pieces refer to this and other topical items at the beginning and end of some programs. Episodes 35 - 39 were particularly affected by this, and in their original broadcast contained intros dealing with the slow production pace.
ABC Broadcast History March 1985 - February 1989: Tuesdays 9:00 PM April 1989 - May 1989: Sundays 8:00 PM
David and Maddie have been together for four weeks and Maddie is wondering where their relationship is going. She thinks all they do is sleep together. David expresses his love for her but she doesn't know what she wants.
David felt the previous evening went well, unaware that Maddie has left town. A client comes to Blue Moon and wants it to find a particularly beautiful woman whom he saw at a charity ball. The only clue is a valuable ear ring left behind.
It's been a week and David is desperate to hear from Maddie, who is still at home and starting to worry her father. A groom supposedly goes missing on his wedding day and the bride's brother wants Blue Moon to find him.
Maddie's father is determined to find out why she is avoiding going home. Bert and MacGillicudy are fighting over Agnes, and Bert is particularly upset. David takes him to a bar to help him forget. Maddie gives Agnes some big news.
Agnes is excited at the news of Maddie's pregnancy and she blurts it out to Herbert, who then tells David. He tries to fly to Chicago but his identity stolen and he finds himself arrested, in jail, and then in solitary confinement.
David is released from solitary and ends up on a work gang. His fellow workers advise him to marry Maddie. He tries to get to a phone to speak to Maddie but all he finds is a bent warder. Agnes and Herbert go looking for David.
Maddie starts getting morning sickness. The furniture is repossessed and the staff are rebelling because they haven't been paid. Maddie's father meets with David and they sort out their differences. He gives David the money to keep going.
On Agnes' mother's return from a holiday in Mexico, stolen gems are planted on her to be smuggled back into America. The criminal wants his gems back and, with David and Maddie away, it is up to Agnes and Herbert to solve the situation.
With Maddie's baby on the way, David is concerned about there being so much to learn. He unsuccessfully tries to enrol in a Lamaze class but an unwed mother comes to him and asks for his help, which he does.
Maddie returns home by train. She is still unsure about David and has dreams and nightmares about being married to him on the trip back. On the journey, she meets a systems analyst returning to Los Angeles and they become friends.
The news of Maddie's marriage affects the office but not David, as he appears happy with the news. A woman asks Blue Moon to approach her husband's mistress with an offer of money to go away. She later kills him in self defence.
David finally gets to meet Walter at the office and then offers to throw Maddie a big wedding, complete with a bachelor party. When David's Lamaze partner goes into labour during the wedding, it all comes to a head at the hospital.
Herbert has spent three weeks guarding a frost-proof grapefruit but all he can think of is Agnes. He asks her to move in together but initially she says no. Sitting at home, Herbert sees his life with Agnes in a series of old movies.
Maddie and Walter finally get divorced. David and Maddie are asked by a businessman to find a mystery woman who has distracted his partner, which threatens to bankrupt his company. Maddie wants to restart the relationship with David.
