Plot

Artist Mick Merisi returns to his studio on New England's quiet Dutchman's Island four years after his wife's death in a plane crash on her way to see his first one-man show. In the years since Claudia's death, Mick has been wandering the country and generally wasting his prodigious talents. But upon his return to the island, Mick encounters a beautiful nude woman emerging from the sea, looking for all the world like Botticelli's Venus. The apparition turns ugly when she takes a camera from her discarded bag and snaps Mick's picture while uttering a harsh "Voyeur!" The next day, the girl turns up dead, and there is no doubt that Mick was the last to see her alive. In order to clear his name, Mick embarks on a journey into the murdered woman's life, only to discover that she was an artist as well - one who captured the destruction of people (often by her own means) on film. Many of those she touched could have wanted her dead. For Mick, the investigation brings him back to the world of the living. The quest for this young woman's killer frees him from his grief, reopens him to love, and plunges him back into art. It is only through his painter's vision and artist's introspection that the crime is solved. At long last, Mick succeeds in the creation of a new work - the portrait of a murderer.
