When King Louis XVI was guillotined in 1793, the watching crowd erupted with cries of 'Vive la Nation! Vive la République!' Parisians rushed forward to dip handkerchiefs in the blood as souvenirs of this central moment in the world's first popular revolution. 'The French Revolution' explains how this came to be. The book follows the often frightening chain of events; from the early days when a mob stormed the Bastille, the greatest fortress in Paris, through the horrific butchery of the Terror, to the execution of the revolutionary leaders, and the ending of the Revolution itself as Napoleon seized control of the country.
