Plot

The relationship of the Christian church to the people of Israel is examined in this Overtures to Biblical Theology volume. The author describes how the early church viewed itself in relation to the events of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Showing how this identity was forged in relation to Judaism and how the Christian communities began to evolve as a religious movement separate from Judaism, Harrington provides an enlarged picture of the emerging church. Such fundamental topics as how the church came to be identified as “the people of God,” “the true Israel,” and “the new Israel” are evaluated and placed in the historic context of the life and thought of Jesus Christ.
