"There must be relatively few Christians who have not read Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, if not his Crace Abounding as well. But how many can even name his other writings some of which deserve a more honourable place in evangelical literature? Two such works on prayer are here brought together. The first, written in Bedford gaol, was published in 1662 under the title, I will pray with the spirit and with the understanding. The second, The Saints' Privilege and Profit or The Throne of Grace, a treatise based on Hebrews 4.16, appeared posthumously in 1692. Suffering and imprisonment, in which he learned much about prayer and the Word, prepared him for such writings. Indeed these treatises are striking illustrations of Spurgeon's claims about Bunyan's works: 'Prick him anywhere, and you will find that his blood is Bibline; the very essence of the Bible flows through him. He cannot speak without quoting a text, for his soul is full of the Word of God'." -Publisher
