Fielding Mellish (Woody Allen) is a nerdy, nebbish, and neurotic appliance product tester. Fielding meets an attractive girl named Nancy (Louise Lasser) who comes to his door as a survey taker for a political action group. Fielding becomes enamored with her and after much pleading, gets her to go out on a date with him. He strives to impress her, going so far as to take part in her political activism and highly liberal views. Nancy soon figures out that Fielding is immature and dumps him. Fielding, however, won't give up his quest for her heart. He flies off to the tiny unstable South American country of San Marcos to change things there, in a strange attempt to win Nancy's affection. While in San Marcos, Fielding is kidnapped by both the corrupt government and separatist rebels. Ultimately, Fielding winds up as president of the newly formed democracy. On a trip back to the United States, to get foreign aid, Nancy approaches a disguised Mellish, unaware of his true identity, because of her respect for his just cause and difficult task in helping the country. Fielding reveals himself to Nancy finally impressing her with his actions.
