John Russell (George C. Scott) had to watch as his daughter and wife were in their car, broken down by the side of the road, which was hit by a truck. The accident killed both his wife and daughter. So John decides to move from New York to Seattle to accept a position teaching music there. Once in Seattle he decides to buy an old historic house because of its grand music room. But he soon discovers that the music he is composing is being picked up by a ghost in the house that wants to utilize his despair to tell the frightening story of how he came to die.
