Harried widower Mr. Brown (Colin Firth) has seven unruly children. His rich Aunt Adelaide (Angela Lansbury) has given Mr. Brown a time limit in which to remarry so that his children will have the influence of a mother's touch. As Mr. Brown is an undertaker along with having all those children, his social life is practically nil. Mr. Brown goes through the entire list of available nannies - or rather his children go through them with their outrageous pranks. The only person who seems to have any influence on the children is the maid, Evangeline (Kelly Mcdonald). Evangeline is fond of the children (and Mr. Brown), and she hopes to better her position in life by learning to read. Finally the children run off what they think is the last nanny, and invade the one sacrosanct area of the house: the kitchen. As they are mixing up a lot of mischief and driving Cook crazy, enter Nanny McPhee (Emma Thompson) with her warts, protruding tooth, and all. Various adventures ensue, with the children almost losing one of their sisters to (fortunately short-sighted) Aunt Adelaide and their father almost marrying the widow of one of his clients! All through the adventures, Nanny McPhee gently teaches her three lessons, not just to the children but to the lonely and overwhelmed Mr. Brown.
