Miles Monroe (Woody Allen) works in a health food store and goes into the hospital for an operation. When he wakes up, it is two hundred years in the future. To his surprise, he discovers that tobacco and fatty foods are actually good for health. But worse, a dictator named "The Leader" has taken over the government. In the future, all humans are tagged with an identity number. So, to keep from being discovered as an alien without this number, Miles pretends to be a household robot for Luna Schlosser (Diane Keaton). When she detects that he is not a robot, she does not turn him in. But when they are both discovered to be dissenters to the military state, they join the rebel underground. They are hunted down by the military in a series of mishaps that mistakes Miles for the chief surgeon to help "The Leader".
