Bankim is thefather of the bengali novel and considered by many as its greatest novelist. Durgesh nandini is his first novel in bengali and the first complete novel in indian literature. Inspired by the romances of walter scott, it is a swash buckling historical epic set in bengal during the reign of the mughal emperor akbar in the sixteenth century.
