They determine that the attackers are decommissioned Weapon X soldiers, and that S.H.I.E.L.D. is taking over the operation to track them down. Before S.H.I.E.L.D. can arrive, they scan the mansion from a distance, but not enough distance to avoid detection by Jean Grey.
