He is the author of articles on the origin of multi-cellular animals, the development of protozoa, and comparative genetics, and is co-editor of "The Lower Comparative Biology and Phylogeny." He has worked at the Bermuda and Hawaii Marine Laboratories on acoel flatworms, and at the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, Osaka University, Japan, on parasitic flagellates. Dr. Hanson was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Fulbright Fellowship, both in 1960.
