The artist-author, whose instruction is given in a very pleasant undidactic manner, begins with encouragement to the diffident novice and by pointing out what the practice of painting has to offer; and so goes on to discuss the right way of seeing things, the use of the different media and choice of subject. His illustrations in black and white, with also a few in colour, are most instructive.
