Montreal's Square Mile was a golden enclave for the rich and powerful in the halcyon days before income tax. Square Milers, who controlled two thirds of the nations wealth, rode to hounds, vacations in Europe and entertained royal visitors in huge Italianate or Gothic houses run by platoons of servants and filled with works of art and expensive bric-a-brac. Like royalty, they had their court photographer, William Notman, whose artistry captured their mansions and their extravagant way of life for posterity.
