1973 marked the thousandth anniversary of the coronation of King Edgar in Bath Abbey as the first king of all England. Since then, except during he Cromwellian interregnum, England has never been without a sovereign. For a millennium the Crown has been the key to England's nationhood and has served to implant in men the habit of feeling and acting together in national matters. Devoting two pages to every sovereign from Edgar to Elizabeth II, the author has created a miniature political and constitutional history of England.
