The most fruitful and balanced criticism of Shakespeare to appear in our time is that of D. A. Traversi. Beginning at the point where A. C. Bradley left off, he proposes a new approach to the plays. This new and greatly expanded version of the original includes much new material and presents the author's views in their definitive form. As such it stands as one of the major achievements in Shakespearean criticism.
