Plot

In 1884 Hendrik Witbooi and his Nama people embarked on a prophetic trek to the fertile north to escape the drought of the Kalahari Desert. At the same time, the imperial delegate walked dr. Göring about a hundred kilometers from there to land in the new German colony of South West Africa - present-day Namibia. There followed a battle for life and death between the German Schutztruppe and the Africans fighting for their independence. The hundreds of letters written by Hendrik Witbooi to German governors, English magistrates and African leaders gave Conny Braam unique insight into the world of Witbooi: his love for the ancient people of the Khoisan, the teachings of missionary Olpp, his distress over the Western credit system that would turn his people into slaves and his intense grief when he realized that Emperor Wilhelm II demanded the total destruction of the rebellious indigenous population. In 1904, eighty-year-old Hendrik once again led the revolt against the German colonial army. He would enter history as one of the greatest freedom fighters known to Africa--Provided by Publisher.
