Plot

Zululand is the harsh, inhospitable, brooding backdrop to this novel; the atmosphere is as potent and heavy as the wild heath of Wuthering Heights. But this is the thunderous heat of colonial Africa, where the veneer of civilisation is thin, and English manners fail before the rawness of the land. Danny Ashburn's in his wheelchair. He has a tale to tell, a turbulent story of vain and vanished passion: of Edward, his golden brother, and beautiful Prudence; of their dominating mother Mrs Ashburgn, and the vein of suppressed violencce that runs, perhaps, in all families. Daphne Rooke herself has written teh introduction to the memorable book - still her personal favouriet, it was described by one British critic as having "the striking power of a cobra".
