Hanley, in a fashion reminiscent of Philby of Arabia or Sir Richard Burton, brings life to this untamed area as he immerses his reader vicariously in his milieu. His understanding of the Arabs and Africans with whom he was in daily contact is exceptional, yet his empathy never overrides a balanced view of the sometimes mad world in which he found himself. Gripping reading, this is autobiography writ large. Essential for courses dealing with the area; and anyone interested in East Africa will have that interest sharpened by this book.
