The book is the result of months of research into what is for many of us a step into an unmapped territory dotted with granite-fronted law courts and criss-crossed by red tape. We often see the law as a slow, hide-bound colossus that restricts and controls our lives in ways that seem baffling and usually incomprehensible. But the law is a vital part of the fabric of society, a thread of right and wrong that runs through everything we do and touch: protecting us when we buy and sell; regulating our marriage and divorce; registering our birth and tidying up after we have died. Without the law, society would be unworkable.
