Plot

Simon is an ordinary, happy, little boy growing up in Sweden in the 1930s. With the outbreak of the Second World War, his life changes. He befriends Isak, a psychologically damaged Jewish boy who has fled Nazi Germany with his father. Simon also discovers that the working-class parents whom he adores are not his real parents, but distant relatives. This love story takes Simon through the privations and hardships of war, his military service and, after the war, his troubled affair with Isak s cousin, released from a concentration camp. In the background is his beloved mother , who watches over him, as constant as the oak trees he played under as a child.
