The King's Speech tells the story of the man who became King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II. After his brother abdicates, George ('Bertie') reluctantly assumes the throne. Plagued by a dreaded stutter and considered unfit to be king, Bertie engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist named Lionel Logue. Through a set of unexpected techniques, and as a result of an unlikely friendship, Bertie is able to find his voice and boldly lead the country into war.

Notes

The King’s Speech is het waargebeurde verhaal over Koning George VI, die om zijn stotterproblemen te overwinnen les kreeg van eigenzinnig logopedist Lionel Logue. Direct na het overlijden van zijn vader en het oneervolle aftreden van zijn broer Edward, wordt Bertie, die al zijn hele leven een ernstig stotterprobleem heeft, gekroond tot Koning George VI van Engeland. Engeland staat op dat moment aan de vooravond van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Zijn vrouw Elizabeth besluit contact te zoeken met de excentrieke Lionel. Ondanks een wat moeilijke start lijkt Lionel’s onorthodoxe methode zijn vruchten af te werpen: de Koning ontwikkelt niet alleen het vertrouwen in zijn stem om het volk toe te spreken, ook ontstaat er een onverwachte, maar hechte vriendschap tussen George en Lionel.
