My quick rating - 5.2/10. This movie is such a shame. The kid's story is a coming-of-age type thing, where you have the teens being the sleuths to solve the mystery is GREAT. I genuinely liked each character for their nuances and were well-acted. But the horror aspect of this movie left so much to be desired. So you are hitting two opposite ends of the spectrum in a movie that could've been great. The period of the late 70s is done so well. I am stalling getting to the bad execution of the horror part. The possessed tape player was a nice idea, and the fact it didn't isolate its attacks on the kid who found the player but wreaked havoc on the whole town randomly was also good. But the demon was trash. And the way it was mixed in with the otherwise great story just didn't work. Ah well, I would bet it is floating around Shudder and the likes, give it a whirl and see what you think.
