My quick rating - 5.2/10. Some nice camerawork. Definitely took the less is more approach and used the lighting & sound effects to create all the tension. This flick delivered an enthralling cinematic experience with its blend of classic haunted house horror and modern storytelling techniques. The film revolves around a skeptical and apprehensive preacher (Ted Ferguson) thrust into a spine-chilling investigation of an ancient, decrepit house, resulting in a haunting narrative that skillfully balances suspense, atmosphere, and character development. His reactions are so amusing as the homeowners keep nagging him to bless the house while informing him of all the strange happenings, none of which he witnesses. The film's strength lies in its adherence to the less-is-more approach, making use of exquisite camerawork, lighting, and sound effects to ratchet up the tension. The audience is immediately drawn into the unsettling atmosphere of the dilapidated house, feeling every creaking floorboard and shadowy corner through the lens of the camera. The careful pacing allows suspense to build gradually, immersing viewers in an eerie sense of unease that lingers long after the credits roll. At the heart of the story is the preacher, a character torn between his skepticism and his growing sense of dread. The internal struggle he faces adds depth to the narrative, making him a relatable focal point amidst the supernatural occurrences. His journey from disbelief to bone-chilling fear resonates with the audience, and his interactions with the enigmatic inhabitants of the house add layers to the unfolding mystery. Unfortunately, Timothy Morton and Audra Todd as that couple didn't add anything to this due to their acting being very uninspiring. The cinematography by Brandt Hackney and the direction of "The Hopewell Haunting" shine for the very modest budget by writer/director Dane Sears. The contrast between the reverend's initial skepticism and the escalating paranormal events is captured through a mixture of claustrophobic close-ups and wide-angle shots that accentuate the grandeur of the haunted house. The lighting choices create an eerie, otherworldly atmosphere, while the sound effects contribute to the escalating tension, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats and hitting the crescendo at the right moments. The film's commitment to the classic haunted house tale is commendable, as it avoids relying on excessive jump scares or over-the-top special effects. Instead, it employs psychological horror to evoke genuine fear, allowing the audience's imagination to run wild and fill in the gaps with their worst fears. Prepare to be captivated by a tale that demonstrates the power of subtlety in delivering bone-chilling scares as long as you don't mind the lack of action or depth.
