My quick rating - 6.3/10. There are some movies that are clearly going to appeal to a certain audience. This is a great example since if you are unfamiliar with the game and its "universe," then this movie will be nothing more than a martial arts fest with some special effects thrown in. Oh, well, that is exactly what it is anyway. So, writing unbiased and not as a fan, this is a story about an MMA fighter who has to team up with some of the greatest fighters to save Earth from the evil outworld attackers. Strangely, this movie does a very good job of telling the stories that are involved with Sub-Zero and Scorpion quite well. This is all still based on a tournament that happens once a generation, where fighters have to go one-on-one to establish the fate of the world. The fighting sequences in this flick are done very well; there is no doubt about that one. Now I won't get carried away since this is still exactly what it is supposed to be, a popcorn flick. Sure for us fans, they did a favor in getting into the story a bit more, and possibly a disservice by adding a character considering there are already a crap ton of them in the first place. Huge fans will be pissed since some are missed. A casual action movie fan will be impressed that a video game movie delivers the goods, especially if they have seen the previous efforts of bringing it to the big screen. I enjoyed the 1995 version slightly less than this one, if that helps. (Mortal Kombat: Annihilation was such a bomb, it has left a bad taste in anyone's mouth). But as far as comparison, this is for sure the one to check out. More attention to detail, far better directing and camerawork. I don't mention acting since, really? Enjoy it for what it is, and don't expect it to be anything more than that.
