Notes

My quick rating - 4,8/10. When the bar is set so high, as Neill Blomkamp did with "District 9" and "Elysium", you are going to expect a certain level of quality. This one did not give anything close to what my expectations were. Maybe my own fault for having any. But for what he was able to churn out in the middle of a pandemic, I suppose there has to be some consideration for that. What we did get was a fairly unique take on the demonic possession idea. The mother-daughter connection that unleashes the force in this isn't terribly new but the exploration of it brings up some interesting visuals. By hooking them up to VR headsets and using some tech that isn't quite here yet, the two can interact even though the mother is in a comatose state. But maybe it isn't the mother that invited the daughter (Carly Pope) in. These scenes are not some ultra-realistic environments, but much more of what you would think would be possible in a simulation of this nature. More blocky, generic-looking people with a strange grainy feel to the outdoors. Too bad that the simulation parts were done about mid-way through the flick. The creature also deserves some props for being quite sinister-looking even though most of the time you have to use your imagination to get a full idea of how it looks. Clearly, this was done by design by Blomkamp to add more atmosphere instead of an instant reveal. There is a bit more to the possession part but I can't go into detail without hitting spoiler territory but it is worth checking out, if interested. More of the problems with this is the lack of exploring the things I am not going into. Holes in the plot and scenes needed to be elaborated on to get you more into the characters and story itself.
