My quick rating - 5.3/10. They did themself no favors showing the monster in this one. But aside from them looking pretty lackluster, the flick is surprisingly good for a shoestring budget. After we see a child find a set of stairs in the middle of a forest and go missing 25 years earlier, they then flash to the present day. Obviously, at this point, someone else will stumble across this mysterious stairwell and take us on a journey of what it is. The actors that we get are adequate but inconsistent, so sometimes they do fine, and others act really stupid. What we do get would be a decent Twilight Zone episode, considering they would take the time to clearly describe what is actually going on. The problem that holds this one back is that it stumbles through fully explaining things, and not for the "use your imagination" reason. It seemed that they never fully hashed out the plot for the movie and limped their way through. Suffice it to say, they do a good job of weaving a twist or two into the story along with bringing it together, even if, along the way, some stones got left unturned. I was working while watching since, after seeing the first monster, I thought for sure I was in for a #turkey, but as I was half paying attention, I realized they were turning in an actual tale here, and one that needed to be followed. So that made me stop and rewind, and I am glad I did. They created a good supernatural vibe in the explanation of the kid, along with what may have happened. And though they did miss a whole lot of what the stairs were and really what they led to, all and all, I was not disappointed. I believe the IMDB reviewers watched it as I started, half paying attention, and then ended confused with an actual plotline evolving while they played on their phones. So that is your word of caution: don't let the silly-looking monster fool you. My opening note shows that I almost let that happen.
