My quick rating - 6.1/10. In case you finished watching "Army of the Dead" and your first thought was, "I wonder what the backstory of Dieter is." Well, you are in LUCK. Man, I wish Netflix still had their affiliate program, back in the mail in days, I never had to pay for my subscription due to that program pulling in members...anyways, the movie. It isn't like having a bank heist movie is a bad thing. I just found this one to be so cookie-cutter, which is tagged with "Army of the Dead," so I did expect there to be something to make it stand out from the crowd. Instead, we get Matthias Schweighöfer starring and directing this Zack Snyder-written backfill. Dieter is your everyday bank teller who runs a YouTube vlog on safes and all their inner workings. Being an expert in the field, he finds himself in a competition to be crowned the king of the safecrackers, which is where he earns the attention of a criminal group to perform the real deal. I would have to assume if such contests exist, this would be where the thieves would in reality do their recruiting, LOL. Things do run quite smoothly to start, but if you know the heist formula, then you know it won't stay that way. Since Dieter is more into this whole thing for thrills and personal accomplishment, he finds himself on the low end of the totem pole. Even with our little twists, everything is way too predictable throughout this one. Still, it is well done, and the directing is quite accomplished for a fledgling director. The characters follow your usual mix of this specialist, that heavy kind of thing, and all do just fine in their respective roles. It very much just felt like a "Fast & Furious"-lite that was pushed out to capitalize on the recent success and keep everyone anticipating the Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas TV show to hit. The action looks good and does like to keep it on the light-hearted side. There is a nice and subtle sense of humor throughout as well. The occasional references to the AOTD were also nicely fit into the timeline to keep the continuity of how he ended up on the job that would ultimately change Dieter forever. Nothing that redefines the genre but still a good time.
