London, 1974. As Britain prepares for electrical blackouts to sweep across the country, trainee nurse Val arrives for her first day at the crumbling East London Royal Infirmary. With most of the patients and staff evacuated to another hospital, Val is forced to work the night shift, finding herself in a dark, near empty building. Within these walls lies a deadly secret, forcing Val to face both her own traumatic past and deepest fears.

My quick rating - 5,2/10. Shudder exclusive if you want to check it out. I didn't really know what it was about going in and I don't think that helped nor hindered. I think seeing this on someone's top 10 of horror in 2021 hurt though since it wasn't close to touching mine. This flick does have atmosphere in spades but with the good, there is also so much of it that you just don't get to see. Yes, it is set in the 70s during widespread power outages but there is a point when you have to allow the audience to see things to fully appreciate them. But as far as our ghost story that we are following, it is slow going, to say the least. Every time something does happen, it is either prefaced or followed by lengthy periods of nothing. Just painful pacing for such a simple story. I would suppose it may be quite frightening to work in a hospital overnight when the power is out so every corner hides something that may or may not be in your mind. But using this so tediously does end up a bit tired. The acting was actually pretty good though, so when the story is being unfolded, they do help draw you into caring of where it is going. I am just going back and forth writing this of below average, then above. The good aspects are just that and are balanced out by the bad. The scares are few and far between while the costuming and sets are above average. I'll leave this one up to you since I can see it go either way by ones' specific taste.
