My quick rating - 5,1/10. I think the marketing was pretty far off on this one. It wasn't a bad flick it just really wasn't that good either. Not to mention being hyped as ultra scary. Sandra Oh and Odeya Rush does a more than an acceptable job as mother-daughter and their acting make the mundane nature of the story a bit more tolerable. But when I see Sam Raimi attached to anything, my expectations tend to jump up unfairly. The story of the remains of the grandmother (Umma) arriving with the two of them and soon after they appear to be haunted by her presence. That is the horror aspect although I think the whole thing was far more a social commentary about how to raise your children. Which message you want to take from this flick though is up to you. The setup looked pretty good aesthetically and had a strange folk horror atmosphere but it never really turned into horror. They did occasionally toss a jump scare at you to keep you awake but it really never developed enough to really scare you. And along with that issue, it is also extremely slow-paced. I really wanted to enjoy this one but unfortunately, it is merely a one-viewing affair that you won't mind checking out but within a week you'll have forgotten it existed.
