Notes

My quick rating - 4,5/10. I was a big fan of the original with Drew Barrymore so let's see how this one fares. And if you are also a fan, you will most likely want to stay away from this one. Even not comparing this one to a superior book and a decent adaptation to screen this still wouldn't stand on its own very well. It seems anything that could have made this movie better was left out. How about explaining the family having these powers, maybe some flashbacks of the parents in college explaining what happened? I know the book touched upon this and it is crucial in making the story have more meaning. The whole thing where there should be character interactions and development is all just rushed and seems to be pushed aside for a few explosions and fireballs for the sake of grabbing attention. There are some good performances that are completely wasted (Zac Efron who you know I am not a fan actually does a great job for one) that could have made your interest in the plight of Charlie (our title character Ryan Kiera Armstrong). Instead, they haphazardly direct her into making silly-looking faces at times and screaming out fire. The character of local townsmen played by John Beasley gets again wasted and swept away by fireballs. None of these interactions do any good in making you care how they got to where they are which is being chased by some secret government branch for having some secret superpowers. It is quite sad that small parts of a book I read easily 30 years ago I can still recall enough to know leaving it out just lessened this flick. And comparing this to the 1984 movie is just not worth your time. In another world where those things don't exist, you would still be left with a mediocre horror/thriller that didn't even use the current technology to wow you with any effects. Even that was lackluster in this whole ordeal. Click below if after all that you are still interested and Amazon will be happy to oblige.
