Trapped on her family’s isolated farm, Pearl must tend to her ailing father under the bitter and overbearing watch of her devout mother. Lusting for a glamorous life like she’s seen in the movies, Pearl’s ambitions, temptations, and repressions collide.

My quick rating - 7,0/10. After watching "X" earlier this year, I was definitely looking forward to seeing the backstory for Pearl after the ending teaser leading up to this one. VOD has brought the sequel in time for #shocktober. I didn't expect this to be on par with the first flick especially since it goes about it in a totally different fashion. The movie is done in a technicolor method to give so much color and vibrance to the scenes. Ti West again shows his appreciation for the flix that have come before with slight nods to Wizard of Oz in appearance and felt a little like Darlin'. Not to mention a slew of horror mainstays with an axe-wielding killer. He is definitely solidifying his place in the modern horror community. There is no question that this movie truly succeeds for one reason only though, Mia Goth. Her performance here is absolutely stunning and if the Oscars weren't so damn pretentious, she would be getting a nomination. Her performance of a young woman who is struggling with her own identity while her life is slipping away is done to such perfection. She brings little demented expressions and actions to life effortlessly. And I know we are talking about a slasher flick but really the movie is more of a strange psychological thriller for most of the runtime. Since you should have seen "X" previously, you'll know there is a sinister evil in her character and this movie is here to demonstrate just where it all came from to lead her into the serial killer she becomes. It does take the turn down the gore-filled road towards the end in a blood-soaked fashion. But this is just so different from the straightforward and bizarre slasher it follows. It needs to be appreciated for being a perfect study of a woman who is just trying to be accepted by all of those around her and when she realizes she won't be, she then decides to destroy them. Be prepared to change gears when checking this one out and you will be thoroughly impressed but for far different reasons. I am very much looking forward to seeing where this continues with MaXXXine!!!!
