Notes

My quick rating - 3.4/10. “Marry Fuck Kill” tries to get the elements of a psychological thriller with those of a demonic possession thriller, but it falls flat in actually conveying a good storyline. While the premise of the movie is interesting enough—it starts with an innocent game that takes a dark turn—I feel that it does not use this premise to its advantage. The plot revolves around five friends meeting for their friend’s funeral, who took her own life in a surprisingly sudden manner. While sitting around to mourn their loss, they recall playing “Marry, Fuck, Kill," a game where you pick three people you would like to marry, screw, or kill. While this is basically what the movie is named after, it is only a sideshow in itself, since the demon gets released through a suicide ritual.

One of the things that bothers me about this movie is that it does not conceive anything new. A demonic game that seems innocuous at the start but eventually leads to demonic possession is something that has appeared in “Urban Legends: Final Cut,” and “The Demonologist” before. It does not add anything fresh or new to the movie, nor does it provide any interesting plot twists that set it apart from other movies in the same genre. It is also clear that it is one of those characters who is a mere puppet for the bigger plot that is about to unfurl. Their reactions are totally fake. But then again, it is true that there is no other way to explain either the couple who practice abstinence until marriage, only to agree to join an orgy that the boyfriend is inviting her to. Also, it is actually true that the completely pointless sex in the movie actually does carry some significance. It takes some time for the authors of this movie (Ian Carpenter & Aaron Martin) to get their point across, but that is about it.

Additionally, it is true that the movie is paced in a totally, utterly absurd manner. While it does establish that it is about five friends who eventually get possessed by some evil forces, it takes ages for that point to get established. Meanwhile, it tries to establish a totally frightening tone that it is about to establish, but ends up falling flat on its face. When it actually tries to do that, it creates a totally confusing plot that is difficult for the viewer to comprehend. The movie is also plagued with poor character development, as the group of friends is flat and does not inspire any investment on the part of the viewer.

Acting in this flick is sufficient, given the poor plot. They do their best with what they were given, but unfortunately for this movie, they couldn’t do enough to make it better than it actually is. Of course, I do agree that they did try their best to connect the dots towards the end of the flick, so while it did end in disappointment anyway, I do believe they deserved some credit for trying to make the best out of this mess. If you are not one of those fans who would be too keen on the demonic possession flicks, then you should stay far, far away from this one.
