My quick rating - 3,7/10. Had to fast-track this one since I am a huge fan of the original. Oh, this dude? Jack Harlow was so out of place on Saturday Night Live so not sure I am expecting much here. I'll just hope we get some good writing to save us. Too focused on their individual relationships instead of their relationship with each other. Ouch. Where is the fun of the "con"? One of my main concerns was the casting choices. Harlow, known primarily as a rapper, felt out of place in his role. His previous performance on SNL left me uncertain about his acting abilities, and unfortunately, my doubts were confirmed. His portrayal lacked the necessary depth and conviction, leaving much to be desired in terms of his performance. Additionally, Sinqua Walls, who played a prominent role in the film, was unfamiliar to me. While it's not uncommon for actors to be relatively unknown, I had hoped for a standout performance that could capture my attention and elevate the film. Unfortunately, Walls fell short of delivering a worthwhile performance. Another disappointment, which I noted while watching above, was the film's focus on individual relationships rather than the dynamic relationship between the characters. The original White Men Can't Jump was known for its chemistry between the lead characters and the engaging banter during their hustling schemes. Regrettably, this aspect was overshadowed by the film's emphasis on personal relationships, which detracted from the fun and excitement that the "con" element should have brought. Despite these flaws, I hoped that the writing would be able to salvage the film. However, it failed to do so. The script lacked the wit, charm, and cleverness that made the original so enjoyable. The dialogue felt flat, and the overall plot lacked the energy and engaging twists that characterized the original film. In conclusion, the 2023 remake was a complete waste of time and did not live up to the standards set by its predecessor. Harlow's miscasting, Walls' underwhelming performance, and the film's failure to capture any of the essence from the original were significant disappointments. Furthermore, the writing lacked the creativity and humor to make the film enjoyable. It is just a regrettable attempt that falls short of capturing the spirit and magic of the original film and exists merely to be a cash grab.
