My quick rating - 6.3/10. I am always game for some good, mindless action. And the latest in the franchise, Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts, delivers a fresh take on the iconic universe that should please long-time fans and newcomers alike. Deciding to go with less established actors instead of more familiar ones was bold, and it still finds a way to lift itself up via an interesting storyline and outstanding special effects. It also takes a bold step by minimizing the role of humans in favor of the true stars of the show – the Transformers themselves. As I have said, we have a more coherent storyline than in some of the other sequels. We also get the introduction of the Maximals and Predacons, in addition to the Autobots and Decepticons, which gives us a more stacked lineup.
After his success with Creed II, Steven Caple Jr. brings in the new characters in a way that seamlessly integrates them into the pre-existing Transformers universe, giving the franchise a much-needed boost. Rise Of The Beasts totally avoids any complex subplots, making it a much smoother and more entertaining film. The special effects are simply awe-inspiring. The detail and realism achieved in the different Transformers on the screen are simply mind-boggling. The blending of the CGI and practical effects of the giant robot characters makes their movements and interactions appear real. The action-packed sequences are a treat to watch, showcasing the progress that has been made in technology since the birth of the franchise.
The boldest and most welcome move is to reduce the significance of human characters. Though in the previous Transformers movies, the human perspective was given prime importance, in Rise of the Beasts, the emphasis is given to the robots. This is a fantastic chance to explore more about the connections, reasons, and histories of the Transformers, which has always been a fan’s demand. Although the human characters are not relegated to the background, the Transformers are in the limelight and receive the attention they deserve. So if you are looking for stars like Mark Wahlberg and Megan Fox, you won't be finding them in this flick. I must admit that I was a little nervous about the casting of unknown actors in the key roles, but the acting in Rise of the Beasts shows that talent can overcome familiarity. The actors’ chemistry was just right, and they seemed to be having a ball. The unknown actors bring a breath of fresh air to the movie, which is in line with the direction this movie suggests they are taking. For me, it was a step down from Bumblebee. Still, this movie is a major improvement for the entire franchise, and I found it more enjoyable than most of the other sequels.
