My quick rating - 4,3/10. Unfortunately, I guessed this one way early in the story which detracted from the whole flick. Cabin Girl attempts to blend the allure of isolated cabin life with supernatural intrigue, but unfortunately, its lack of originality leaves much to be desired. The film follows the journey of Ava Robbins (Rose Lane Sanfilippo), a young woman seeking solace in an isolated cabin under some weird circumstances. However, what starts as a promising premise quickly devolves into a formulaic narrative that fails to deliver any genuine surprises. The film's central flaw lies in its predictability. From the moment Ava's fascination with the supernatural and this local town is introduced, it's evident to even the casual viewer where the story is headed. The pacing of the events feels rushed, as the strange occurrences begin almost immediately after Ava settles into the cabin. This premature escalation leaves no room for character development or a sense of genuine unease that is crucial for a successful supernatural thriller. This is evident in the man who is constantly shown watching Ava. This may have been by design but still, everyone aside from Ava is undeveloped. Despite its shortcomings, the flick does boast some redeeming qualities. Lane Sanfilippo delivers a commendable performance, managing to infuse Ava with a mix of curiosity and trepidation. Regrettably, even her efforts aren't enough to salvage the film from its trite storyline. The plot's lack of originality is further exacerbated by dialogue that feels forced and uninspired. Characters often speak in clichés and offer predictable reactions to the bizarre events, making it difficult for the audience to truly connect with their experiences. This superficial engagement prevents any real investment in Ava's plight, even when the stakes are meant to be at their highest. It could have been an intriguing exploration of the thin line between curiosity and obsession, as well as the consequences of delving into the unknown. However, it falls short by adhering too closely to well-worn tropes of the genre. The film's potential is undercut by its inability to surprise or captivate, resulting in an experience that feels disappointingly formulaic.
It isn't a completely missed opportunity to breathe fresh life into the supernatural thriller genre, especially for being a Tubi original. While the cinematography and lead performance show glimpses of promise, the film's predictable plot and lack of originality ultimately lead to a forgettable and underwhelming viewing experience. But if you don't mind these shortcomings, it is made well enough for an indie flick.
