Notes

My quick rating - 5.2/10. This flick found itself in the spotlight as my featured trailer of the week, but did it truly deserve that honor? With a mix of decent jump scares and visually striking creatures, this PG-13 horror flick offers a familiar yet entertaining experience for genre enthusiasts. The story revolves around a group of friends who, in typical horror fashion, recklessly violate the sacred rule of Tarot readings. This careless act unleashes an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards. As fate would have it, they find themselves in a deadly race against time, each confronting their terrifying destinies. One of the film's highlights is Jacob Batalon's performance as Paxton. His presence on screen is magnetic, often stealing scenes and adding a layer of charm and relatability to the otherwise predictable plot. Batalon's ability to balance humor and fear brings a refreshing dynamic to the movie. The creatures, designed to mimic the Tarot cards, are another thing that jumped out at me. Their eerie and unique appearances contribute to some genuinely creepy moments, enhancing the overall atmosphere of the film. However, beyond these visuals, it struggles to break free from the conventions of the genre. Despite its promising premise, the movie follows a by-the-book approach to horror. It adheres to many of the tropes and clichés we've seen countless times before. The jump scares, while effective, are predictable, and the storyline doesn't venture far from the typical formula of friends facing a supernatural threat. Basically, it delivers a serviceable horror experience with some standout moments, particularly thanks to Batalon's performance and the creatively designed creatures. However, its reliance on familiar tropes and predictable scares prevents it from becoming a memorable entry in the genre. If you're a horror fan looking for a decent flick to pass the time, this flick might be worth a watch but don't expect it to leave a lasting impression.
