Society in the United States has collapsed as a result of a mysterious plague that brings the dead back to life as ferociously hungry zombies. Stephen Andrews (David Emge) and Francine Parker (Gaylen Ross) are at the WGON television studios in Philadelphia where they plan to steal the station’s traffic helicopter to try to escape the zombies. They meet up with Roger De Marco (Scott H. Reiniger) and Peter Washington (Ken Foree), fleeing members of a SWAT team that is part of a massacre at an apartment house full of immigrants and zombie dead. The four escape by air towards Canada but end up at an abandoned shopping mall, where they run off the resident zombies, seal the entrances with trucks, and hole up to enjoy all the material goods in the deserted stores. However, the mall becomes a trap as zombies gather all around it. When a gang of bikers breaks into the mall and lets in hundreds of the undead, bloody mayhem ensues. The survivors of the original four manage to make their way to the helicopter and escape once again to an uncertain future.
