My quick rating - 6.3/10. I am almost positive I have seen this so this is the last one to complete my After Dark Film Fest collection. You will have to deal with subtitles for this one assuming you don't speak French. Speaking of subtitles, whoever made them did a piss-poor job in translation. The flick plunges you into a chaotic world, where political turmoil meets the sinister underbelly of society. The film, directed by Xavier Gens, doesn't shy away from delving into the darkest corners of human nature. Set against the backdrop of a violent post-election Paris, the movie weaves a chilling tale of survival and desperation. The story follows a group of young thieves attempting to escape the wrath of the political unrest, only to find themselves trapped in a nightmarish situation at an inn controlled by neo-Nazis. Their struggle for survival is amplified by the haunting narration of Karina Testa, a character burdened by the weight of the world's malevolence, who vocally rejects the idea of bringing a child into such a bleak reality. It is unapologetically brutal, portraying a family so twisted and deranged that their actions leave the audience both horrified and captivated. The film doesn't hold back, offering a raw and visceral experience that unflinchingly explores the depths of human depravity. The ultra-violence depicted on screen is jarring, leaving a lasting impression long after the credits roll. One of the film's strengths lies in its ability to create an atmosphere of palpable tension. The neo-Nazi antagonists are portrayed with chilling authenticity, their ideologies and actions striking fear into the hearts of both the characters and the audience. The poor subtitles, while potentially challenging for some viewers, do not detract significantly from the overall impact of the film, thanks to the powerful visual storytelling. Testa, portrayed with conviction and depth, becomes the emotional anchor of the movie. Her internal conflict and determination to resist bringing a child into a world tainted by violence and hatred add a layer of depth to the narrative. Her narration, delivered with poignant honesty, serves as a haunting commentary on the harsh realities faced by many in our own world. Frontière(S) is not a film for the faint of heart. It is a disturbing exploration of humanity's capacity for cruelty and the lengths some will go to survive in a world gone mad. While it may be too intense for some, those willing to brave the darkness will find a thought-provoking and harrowing cinematic experience that lingers in the mind long after the screen fades to black.
