Movie review: Leatherface is back. Ok, bear with me. This is a sequel to the original 1974 "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." Now before you start yelling "there have already been multiple sequels to the TCM movie", allow me to explain. This movie takes up towards the end of the original, yet alters the ending. This allows for an entirely different storyline to unfold than numbers 2 and 3 used. So that being said, this story follows a child that was left when the townspeople killed the rest of the Sawyers (Leatherface) family. This is where it changes from the original end, so warp about 20 some years ahead when the child, Heather (Alexandra Daddario), inherits out of the blue a "house" from the Sawyer estate. So her and some friends decide to head to check the house out on the way to a trip to New Orleans. On the way, they pick up the obligatory guy who needs a ride (in other words, extra people to kill). So the 5 get to the mansion and are amazed at the place which leads to exploring. The dude they picked up obviously was just conning the kids and was going to rob them but in his greed he lets loose whatever was left in the cellar. From here this movie turns into the usual type slasher film, with leatherface chasing and killing the participants in expected gruesome and bloody ways. I may take some heat for actually suggesting this, but the writers turned out quite a backstory to weave this together and not make it the typical horror movie. The acting was pretty good for this type of flick from unknowns. The other girl (Tania Raymonde) in the flick was so damn annoying I am not sure if I should congratulate her performance or seriously dislike her if she is really that irritating. The scenery used, which of course isn't in Texas, looked very nice and the extra scenes outside of the mansion had a very realistic look to them (in Louisiana). The scene in the carnival was very nice and welcome to see leatherface outside of the home and out in general public. The cut-editing wasn't bad when it was time to use it for chase scenes these movies are famous for. If you are a fan, you won't be disappointed but may be a bit pissed at how they went around the original to create a new story. If not a fan, that won't matter. I used the term average, or alluded to that, and my score reflects it. 5.1/10 IMDB 4.9
