My quick rating - 6,5/10. The setting is New England in the 1630s. William (Ralph Ineson) and Katherine (Kate Dickie) lead a devout Christian life with five children, homesteading on the edge of an impassable wilderness. When their newborn son vanishes and crops fail, the family turns on one another. Beyond their worst fears, a supernatural evil lurks in the nearby wood. A great looking and sounding movie that plays at the mind more for the horror aspect than it does with gore and loud scare moments. More of a thinking persons horror/thriller that plays out well in the atmosphere created. Even with the moderately short running time of just over an hour and a half, though, this movie seems to drag on quite a bit and may turn off casual moviegoers. Don't let that stop you from seeing a well rounded film that comes at a time where the more gore the better is the norm.
