Plot

Product Description Eighteen articles discuss the basics of sports ranging from basketball, soccer, and hockey to water ballet, fencing, and lacrosse From School Library Journal Grade 4-6-- A compilation of articles, reprinted from the past two decades of Highlights for Children magazine, about 18 sports from surfing and hockey to lacrosse, fishing, and baseball. Each three-page article examines the sport briefly, covering history, equipment, skills, and rules in typical Highlights style. Sidebars feature facts, word skills, questions, and further activities, as well as listing organizations and other books related to the sport. This turns each article into a learning experience, which may distract readers. A glossary of terms includes some nonsports vocabulary such as "nuisance," "gratifying," and "treacherous." Although many of the sports are somewhat elite, such as fencing, bicycle racing, or skydiving, more common childhood activities are also included. While this book would be helpful for newcomers to the sport, it would work best as a sports encyclopedia for reports and quick information. A participant would want to turn to more detailed books for additional how-to information. --Susan Schuller, Milwaukee Public LibraryCopyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.
